Think creatively

The ability to think creatively and develop original ideas serves us greatly in life. Whether it’s at home, at school, or in our lives beyond, innovating and having confidence in our ideas is hugely important. Critical thinking is also essential to help us find solutions to problems, evaluate options and think strategically.

Embrace new challenges

Our Creative Problem Solving course develops your child’s ability to think creatively to find different ways to approach a task. Learning how to think creatively can help them feel confident and increase their readiness to embrace new challenges. Developing critical thinking can also help them feel more independent, giving them the tools and strategies to approach life in a new way.

Course Breakdown Questions

As ever, we’re keen to ensure the children remain safe during the week. As such, we will be adhering to our Covid-19 policy which worked very smoothly during our offline courses last Summer and October 2020. Further to this, government guidance on out-of-school activities has been released which coincided with us sharing course information with Neill Lunnon. As a result of the guidance, during the booking process we need confirmation from you that the Role Models Easter Course allows either parent to work, search for work, undertake education or training, attend a medical appointment or address a medical need, or attend a support group.

In line with our Covid-19 policy, groups of Years 3-4 and 5-6 will be a maximum of 15 children. We hope your children are as excited as we are and that they enjoy the return to school. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The course is designed to develop the key skills of creativity and critical thinking. The week includes lots of fun activities which encourage the children to use their critical thinking to solve problems, and use their creativity to come up with new ideas. Specific activities include working as a team to empty a bucket of ‘toxic waste’, designing their own ‘Dragon’s Den’ innovative product as well as pitching their idea, and solving a series of short challenges in a fixed amount of time.

Session 1: What is Creativity

What is creativity and why is it important? How is creativity linked to mindset?

Session 2: Problem Solving Steps

What steps should we follow when approaching a problem? Application of this process to specific problems and everyday challenges.

Session 3: Innovation

How do we do something with creativity? Practising our creativity muscle and learning ways to innovate.

Session 4: Critical thinking and Growing My Creativity

How do we make decisions and think independently? Applying this to group work. What kills creativity? What are the best conditions for creative thinking? How can I be my most creative self?

Our courses are fast-paced, high energy and challenging. Your child will be active, engaged and up on their feet. None of the tasks are easy; in fact, we don’t mind if the children struggle with the exercises at the first attempt. It is through this process that resilience and strength of character can be built, in a positive and supportive environment.

Our courses are built on three elements:

  • Active learning
  • Ambitious content
  • Serious fun

How do you feel about creativity? In order to be our most creative we must let go of the fear of making mistakes! You will be solving lots of challenges and tasks with the other children.

  • 4 x 5 hour days
  • A group of around 12 children will be led by an inspirational Role Model
  • You can wear comfortable clothes and have a drink nearby in case you need it
  • It will be a fun week of games, talking, watching some videos and thinking together with the group
  • We would love you tell us your ideas and feelings during the activities, so talking is encouraged! But if there’s anything you don’t want to do, that is fine too!
  • We can’t wait to meet you and learn some awesome new skills together!

We are able to offer transport to and from Brook Green and Caldicott School everyday. Pickup will be from the south side of Brook Green, between Luxemburg Gardens and Mercedes Place to Caldicott School at 08:45. Children will arrive back at 16:00.

We will be working with Ontime minicabs to offer 8 seater minicabs as the Caldicott minibus service is unavailable due to insurance complications. Ontime’s drivers all have had enhanced DBS checks and are fully responsible for the children’s wellbeing.

To use this service, please email at least 7 days before the course begins, and let us know which days you require transport. This service will cost £5.25/child/journey.

Our courses are not designed just for children who struggle with creativity, problem solving and independent thinking; we believe everyone should be developing this important life skill. Your child may already have a great imagination but perhaps needs to develop their independence or their resilience when problem solving.  Working creatively with others throughout the week can help boost general self-confidence and your child’s perception of their own creative potential. The course is a great way for children to explore being outside of their comfort zone within a fun and supportive environment.

Our highly experienced team of Role Models are passionate about both education and social & emotional wellbeing. They’re energetic, engaging, and curious. They’re adept at combining educational rigour with fun, to create active learning environments that children love. All have been interviewed by our Recruitment Team and are reference and DBS checked.

Meet Brigid:

  • Parent presentation – we invite parents and carers to attend a 45-minute ‘Parent Presentation’ usually on the first day of the course at 10am. This includes an overview of what your child will learn, together with ideas and strategies for supporting their learning at home. Please note that due to the current circumstances, we may send out a pre-recorded webinar version of this instead
  • End of day email – these emails summarise what your child covered so you can discuss this with them. They may also include photos of your child taking part if consent has been given
  • Top tips – daily tips from Louise, our Head of Character Education, on how parents and carers can support the development of life skills at home
  • Certificate – a branded, official certificate to congratulate your child for completing the course
  • Written report – parents receive a written report from the Role Model working with their child, highlighting their child’s strengths and areas for further development, which includes ideas and strategies for supporting their child at home
  • Follow-up videos – three videos from Louise, sent after the course has been completed to remind your child of the key course themes

The Role Models Life Skills programme includes 8 different courses for children in Years 1-6 (ages 5-7 & 8-11). These separate courses can be completed in any order, or on their own.

Our courses follow an education framework developed by teachers, education experts and business leaders. This framework, based on the work of the Partnership for 21st century learning, defines the skills and knowledge that children need to thrive at school, at home and beyond. Our courses have been written by our Character Education team who are highly qualified educators. Our course content emphasises the importance of developing life and career skills alongside academic attainment. You can read more about the other courses which we offer here and you can read more about the partnership for 21st Century learning here.
