Creating a positive mindset

Children’s reactions to situations often stem from what they’re thinking. Knowing how your mind can work for you, rather than against you, is a powerful approach to learning and life in general. Perfectionism can set in from a very young age and often stems from a fear of mistakes and judgement of others. Our Brilliant Me and My Mind Course uses the power of story to help children explore how to see things and think differently about them. What a revelation to find out that we are supposed to find new things hard and that the mistakes we make actually help us learn!

This course uses the power of story and fun, creative activities to help children believe in themselves. Brilliant ‘Billy the Bunny’ accompanies the children throughout the week to help them navigate their emotions in a fun and supportive environment.

Letting go of fearing mistakes

Brilliant Me & My Mind is specifically designed to help your child:

  • Move away from perfectionism
  • Learn to take risks and try new experiences
  • Let go of fearing mistakes and failure
  • Believe in their own capabilities
  • Learn to think positively when faced with a challenge
  • Move from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’t YET’

Course Breakdown Questions

Each day, two stories are shared with the children based around the power of our mindset. Then, creative activities help them link the learning within the story to their everyday lives. Daily mindfulness activities are included to help the children learn to manage their emotions, as well as a daily ‘mission’ which is a simple task to help them embed their learning. Brilliant ‘Billy the Bunny’ accompanies the children throughout the week and is used to help the children talk about how they feel. Talking about certain situations Billy might think negatively in can sometimes be an easier step than talking directly about our own experiences.

The stories shared in The Brilliant Me & My Mind course are based around the following themes:

  1. Developing a ‘Can-Do’ attitude
  2. The power of YET
  3. Feeling stuck
  4. Dealing with unhelpful thoughts
  5. Responding to failure

One example of the stories shared during the week is the fantastic ‘Beautiful Oops’ by Barney Saltzberg. This books encourages the children to understand that when we think we’ve made a mistake, we should think of it as an opportunity to make something beautiful. Through looking at the illustrations the children reflect on how they feel about the mistakes they make; every smudge, spill, and failed drawing can be the beginning of something new and exciting. After reading the inspiring book, the children are then challenged to turn a range of ‘mistakes’ into new opportunities.

Fun and fast paced learning! There will be a mixture of games, stories, and activities all delivered by Role Models who are experienced with working with this age range of children. There will be breaks built into the structure of the day including a 30 minute play during the lunch break.

Our courses are built on three elements:

  • Active learning
  • Ambitious content
  • Serious fun

Sometimes we all get scared about making mistakes, but mistakes can actually help us learn! You will learn about how to think positively, try new things and not worry about being perfect.

You are going to listen to some stories, play some games and learn new things to help you feel your happiest, most confident and BRILLIANT self.

  • 5 x 5 hour days
  • A group of around 12 children will be led by an inspirational Role Model
  • You can wear comfortable clothes
  • It will be a fun week of games, talking, watching some videos and thinking together with the group
  • We would love you tell us your ideas and feelings during the activities. Being reflective and open to discussions means you’ll get so much more from the course
  • We can’t wait to meet you and learn some awesome new skills together!

This course is not designed just for children who are perfectionists; we believe everyone should be given the gift of realising they have a choice over how and what they think. Even if your child seems generally positive, the stories and concepts shared throughout the week equip them with the skills to fall back on whenever they find themselves up against a new challenge. Working within a group using the skills of collaborating and communicating is also a great way to boost general self-confidence and self-awareness. The course is also an opportunity for children to explore being outside of their comfort zone within a fun and supportive environment.

Our highly experienced team of Role Models are passionate about both education and social & emotional wellbeing. They’re energetic, engaging, and curious. They’re adept at combining educational rigour with fun, to create active learning environments that children love. All have been interviewed by our Recruitment Team and are reference and DBS checked.

Meet Brigid:

  • Parent presentation – we invite parents and carers to attend a 45-minute ‘Parent Presentation’ usually on the first day of the course at 10am. This includes an overview of what your child will learn, together with ideas and strategies for supporting their learning at home. Please note that due to the current circumstances, we may send out a pre-recorded webinar version of this instead
  • End of day email – these emails summarise what your child covered so you can discuss this with them. They may also include photos of your child taking part if consent has been given
  • Top tips – daily tips from Louise, our Head of Character Education, on how parents and carers can support the development of life skills at home
  • Certificate – a branded, official certificate to congratulate your child for completing the course
  • Written report – parents receive a written report from the Role Model working with their child, highlighting their child’s strengths and areas for further development, which includes ideas and strategies for supporting their child at home
  • Follow-up videos – three videos from Louise and ‘Billy the Bunny’, sent after the course has been completed to remind your child of the key course themes

Parents will also be sent a list of all the story books shared throughout the course; you may wish to purchase any of the titles which have particularly resonated with your child to help revisit the themes.

The Role Models Life Skills programme includes 8 different courses for children in Years 1-6 (ages 5-7 & 8-11). These separate courses can be completed in any order, or on their own.

Our courses follow an education framework developed by teachers, education experts and business leaders. This framework, based on the work of the Partnership for 21st century learning, defines the skills and knowledge that children need to thrive at school, at home and beyond. Our courses have been written by our Character Education team who are highly qualified educators. Our course content emphasises the importance of developing life and career skills alongside academic attainment. You can read more about the other courses which we offer here and you can read more about the partnership for 21st Century learning here.

Yes we do! You can either book a standard day (10am – 3pm) or an extended day (8.30am until 6pm). Our course content will only run between the hours of a standard day.
